Greetings from Shirati,
Lloyd and I have been very busy since the medical mission is over. Lloyd is reviewing, updating the strategic plan he did a few years ago, working on the water project, etc. I am back to teaching English every day, 3 different classes, supervising the building of the kitchen and play structures, going to homes in the village to assess needs and then acting on them, etc. Both of us are also doing paperwork and follow-up work for both missions, so never a dull moment. I have many interesting stories to share but here is one.
An interesting day……………….
Another unforgettable day
On Thursday after my morning English classes, I went with the palliative care team to visit some of their patients in their homes in the village. I wanted to get into the homes, meet their clients and see if there was something we could do. There is so much poverty and so much need, and I’ve seen it many times, but it is still overwhelming when you see how the people live, in utter poverty. I know we can’t help everyone, but if we can help even a few families to make their lives better, then it’s worth it. As I’ve said many times, the drive to the villages is so interesting and the scenery so beautiful, yet among all that beauty there is so much pain and suffering.

Thanks to all who attended and supported our annual gala – it was a wonderful evening of dancing, good food and shopping!
Our current project came about as a result of our founder Carol Lalonde and her husband Jean-Guy, traveling to the village of Shirati, Tanzania. What they found there was disheartening. Presently, the hospital receives less than half of its water needs to manage all of the hospital’s facilities. It is not uncommon for the hospital to run out of water, resulting in maintenance workers having to get water from the lake which is 4 kilometres away.
A hospital is unable to run without a stable, permanent water source and the problem is a concerning public health issue. A secure source of water is imperative for a hospital the size of Shirati KMT Hospital that services such a large number of community members.
It is our hope that through fundraising and your donations, we will be able to provide this community with a safe, reliable water system.
In partnership with Water for Life Cornwall, students from St. Anne created posters and masks to help decorate for the upcoming Uganda Fundraiser. As part on an outreach program, the grade 8 students created colorful posters depicting themselves and their Ugandan penpals. The posters were so striking that they have been made into packages of 5 artcards at a cost of $10. All proceeds are going to help provide a well for the people of Kamengo, Uganda. We sincerely thank these students, under the direction of their art teacher Sandi LaGallais, for sharing their wonderful talents.
